Does YOUR board know what to say?

After 30 years in brand development, it still surprises me when I encounter nonprofit boards whose members don’t feel completely confident speaking about the organization they represent.

Most show up to serve as board members because they care enough about what the organization is doing to contribute their time, talent, and treasure. They are not lacking passion, and they were not chosen because of a deficit in perspective or influence in some important area. So, what gives? How can otherwise passionate, engaged people become tongue-tied when it comes to talking up causes they care about?

Tough love needed

Through the eyes of a brand development specialist, it’s a clear sign the organization’s communication planning needs some love and attention. And that the board is not the only place we’d find missed ROI opportunities.

When an organization’s board cannot confidently, clearly, and persuasively prioritize what they need to say to gain funders or followers, it’s often because there has not been enough strategy dedicated to understanding how the organization wants to be known, nor time spent developing the roadmap, communication tools, or infrastructure needed to achieve it.

Truly impactful nonprofits make certain all stakeholders understand more than what their organization does. They ensure every ambassador speaks confidently and consistently about WHY IT MATTERS.
